Instead of labelling fans' boos as "unsportsmanlike", Roy Keane should understand the love-hate relationship between Liverpool and Trent Alexander-Arnold..

Unless you have been living under the rock or haven't been following the news for the past few days, you've probably all heard about Manchester United legend Roy Keane's outburst against Liverpool fans who boo-ed when their former England right-wing-back Trent Alexander-Arnold returned to Anfield for the first time since his departure this summer.

In fact, it's no surprise. I knew Keane would unleash a torrent of criticism on the Sky Sports program Overlap, which he hosted with former teammate Gary Neville, after the match, seemingly like he has found a weapon in the process and turning his ire on Liverpool and its fans.

Sure enough, the former Manchester United midfielder and captain, who famously clashed with then-manager Mick McCarthy in Saipan and subsequently leave the Ireland national team before the the 2002 World Cup, criticized the Reds fans for "lacking sportsmanship," seemingly misunderstanding their feelings.

First of all, I want to say, Mr. Roy Keane, it's incredibly ironic that those words came from your mouth!

The main reason Liverpool fans' love for Alexander-Arnold turned to hate wasn't actually because of his move to Real Madrid, but because he betrayed the love they had given him.

By now, everyone has likely seen the reports, and even the player himself has confirmed, that Trent Alexander-Arnold secretly started learning Spanish with a tutor six months before leaving Liverpool.

Furthermore, a review of his past interviews from the two to three years before leaving Liverpool reveals that he stated his childhood dream was to graduate from Kirkby (Liverpool's youth academy), play for the first-team, win as many trophies as possible, and one day become Liverpool's captain.

He even repeatedly gave fans false hope before officially leaving last season that he would be willing to negotiate a contract extension with sporting director Richard Hughes and stay, only to be met with a dismissive statement: "I wanted a new challenge, and joining Real Madrid was a dream come true."

Given how he's described it, can you really blame Liverpool fans for booing him so vehemently after learning of his departure during last season's match against Arsenal?!

Liverpool fans don't suddenly hate a departing player, nor do they suddenly despise a player they once idolized. Players hated by the Reds' fans are those whose actions and departures are seen as acts of betrayal.

For example, Raheem Sterling went on strike and claimed he had low wages and joined Manchester City.

Then Mario Balotelli relentlessly criticized Liverpool upon his departure.

And Michael Owen, who after joining Manchester United, feigned ignorance, claiming he didn't understand why Liverpool fans no longer liked him.

These are all vivid examples of why a Liverpool player later became hated by the fans!

Yes, he was a key player who helped Liverpool secure their sixth Champions League title.

He was also a key player in the club's second Premier League title win last season.

This doesn't mean fans have no right to be upset with his behavior, nor does it mean his contributions to the team can offset all his betrayal of Liverpool.

Furthermore, Mr. Keane, you were the one who, three years after being criticized by Alfe Inge Haaland, maliciously broke his leg in revenge, prematurely ending his professional career.

Speaking of lack of sportsmanship, I think there's probably no other player in world football who is more "unsportsmanlike" than you, the former Manchester United captain who ruined someone's career simply because you couldn't stand criticism!
